  4. Chocolate and non-chocolate confectionery
  5. A food product whose predominant constituent is sugar or chocolate

Policies:

Revisions:

  1. New codes have been assigned. The system is described in Discussion Note N003: Revised hierarchical food codes.
  2. The Core Classification version 98/1 category for Fruit jams, jellies and marmalades has been replaced by Jams, marmalades and spreads to include, for example, Chocolate spread.
  3. A category for Fruit syrup has been created in the Syrups subgroup, so these are no longer included in the Non-chocolate dessert topping subgroup (as they have other uses).

Discussion:

  1. Associated with the question of whether fruit jams and marmalades should be classified as sugar products or fruit products is whether they should be categorised on the basis of sugar content. A food classification might prefer to separate jams and marmalades down to individual products such as Orange marmalade that do not necessarily match with particular sugar levels. In this case, sugar level might be considered a separate facet, with descriptors used to code this aspect. Another related point is whether sorbitol, as used in diabetic products, is considered a carbohydrate but not a sugar.
