Main Group 11: Beverages (non-milk)

Classification policies

Group 11 classification

Inclusions:

  1. Alcoholic beverages
  2. Non-alcoholic beverages. Fruit juices and nectars have at present been retained in the Beverages main group although alternatively they might be assigned to the Fruits main group (e.g. Group 9 in the Norwegian proposal) as fruit products.

Exclusions:

  1. Milk beverages, for powders see Milk beverage powders in the Milk and milk products main group. Made-up drinks are coded at the appropriate milk
  2. Milkshake powder, see Milk beverage powders in the Milk and milk products main group.

Policies:

  1. Beers and wines are classified according to alcohol percentage by volume. Their alcohol-free varieties are included in the appropriate categories together with their alcohol-containing forms.
  2. Low-calorie ('diet') soft drinks are recorded using the non-diet category plus a descriptor.
  3. Carbonated waters (except 'Tonic water') are classified in the subgroup 'Water', not 'Carbonated soft drinks'.

Revisions:

  1. New codes have been assigned. The system is described in Discussion Note N003: Revised hierarchical food codes.
  2. In version 99/2, the category Alcoholic long drinks has been replaced by Beers and malt beverages and Ciders, perries and similar drinks. Within the latter, the existing category Ginger beer, alcoholic has been renamed Ginger beer, and the separate version 99/1 category 11.40.36 Ginger beer has been removed. This brings the classification into line with the policy of categorising alcoholic and non-alcoholic forms together.

Discussion:

  1. Some minor and specialist drinks such as Elderflower 'champagne' have been included as reminders of types of beverage which might otherwise be omitted. This and Ginger beer have for the present been placed in the Ciders, perries and similar drinks subgroup, but this should be reviewed taking into consideration any further light alcoholic drinks of this type that may be identified. A related case is that of home-made wines which currently form a category within Wines although these may include drinks that do not fall within a legal definition of wine.
  2. Is there a need to distinguish between Red and White wine and/or Sweet and Dry wine (beyond the inclusion of Dessert wine)? Possibly alcoholic content for wines (and beers) should be recorded through a descriptor (cf. fat in milk, oil in salad dressing). Possibly there are better alcohol ranges for light and alcohol-free wines.
  3. It may be useful to have the subgroups of 'Carbonated soft drinks', 'Non-dilution still drinks' and 'Dilution drinks' (i.e. concentrates which are diluted with water prior to consumption) even though 'Non-dilution still drinks' may be an uncommon category.
